Causes of Low FMGE Passing Percentage

As observed from trends in previous years, a low passing percentage is a common occurrence. Additionally, less than half of the candidates who undertake the FMGE exam successfully pass it. Several factors contribute to this phenomenon, including:

  1. Limited Clinical Exposure: Medical aspirants who pursue their education in foreign countries often face challenges in getting proper clinical exposure. The lack of hands-on experience can make it difficult for them to be ready for the practical parts of the FMGE exam.
  2. Disparities in Educational Standards: The standard of medical education in India is generally higher compared to many other countries. Consequently, the FMGE question paper may pose greater difficulty for foreign graduates who are accustomed to a different academic curriculum.
  3. Inadequate Infrastructure: Many medical colleges abroad lack proper educational infrastructure and fail to provide sufficient patient exposure to their students. This deficiency can impact the candidates’ readiness for the FMGE exam, which requires a comprehensive understanding of clinical scenarios.
  4. Emphasis on Clinical Experience: The FMGE exam now incorporates clinical case scenarios, emphasizing the importance of practical patient experience. Candidates are required to demonstrate their ability to apply medical knowledge in real-life situations, making hands-on experience important for exam success.
